The FDA has now cleared SDF (silver diamine fluoride) for use in treating caries in children. This is a boon to young patients who, for various reasons, cannot tolerate regular cavity probing, cleaning, and filling procedures.
The colorless liquid is applied directly to the carious lesion to prevent its spread to adjacent tooth areas.
The only commercial brand available in the United States at this time is Advantage Arrest.
Studies are also being conducted to see if the fluoride can be used on the elderly who have unrelated health problems that could prevent the use of regular dental procedures for caries.
