When Are Dental X-Rays Needed?

Dr. Paul Beale, of the Bayview Dental Clinic in Sarasota, Florida, says that recent newspaper stories about dental x-rays is needlessly alarming the public: “Recent news stories have focused on a few, a very few, dentists who insist on x-rays at nearly every appointment. This is never a normal procedure, unless there are concerns about an oral cancer or other life-threatening disease.”

Dr. Beale goes on to say that dental patients should discuss their concerns with their practitioner, who will, in turn, have a complete dossier on the patient’s physical condition prior to initiating any radiation exposure.

A quarterly dental x-ray, says Dr. Beale, is normally all that is needed, and is considered safe for everyone from the age of 7 on up.
